Samantha enjoys the Disney College program
Samantha Bortle’s ambitions in hospitality management sparked her interest in the Disney College program. When she applied as a sophomore she didn’t get in, but she wasn’t giving up.
“It’s one of those things I really wanted to participate in,” she said. “I’ve always loved Disney. Plus, I wanted to tell other companies I had worked there.”
The application process was strenuous. First, she sent in her application, where she specified which area she wanted to work in. Next, came a web-based interview with several questions. Lastly, a phone interview, where Samantha knew she needed to let her personality show.
“They are looking for people who are bubbly and happy,” she said. “People who represent Disney’s brand. Be yourself and let your personality show.”
After applying for the second time, Samantha got accepted into the program. She also got her second choice of departments, full service food and beverage, which meant she’d be working in restaurants that took reservations for dining.
Every morning, Samantha put on her colonial dress and bonnet and headed to The Liberty Tree Tavern, where she and a few other ladies worked as hosts from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. She did a variety of tasks including bussing tables, seating and greeting people, and stocking the buffet. At the end of her experience, Samantha knew she made the right career choice.
“Prior to this experience, I knew I wanted to work in the hospitality industry,” she said. “But after I completed the program, I knew I HAD to work in the industry.”
Samantha loved this opportunity and is very thankful she didn’t give up after her first try.
“It was a once in a lifetime experience,” she said. “And of the best decisions I have ever made.”
