Jessie Glanz offers her student perspective as a CHS ambassador
After connecting with a dietitian during the summer following her freshman year, Jessie knew she found her passion. Before that personal connection, she had a difficult time deciding what to study.
“I came in open-option, and changed my major four or five different times,” she said. “I went to pre-physical therapy, then exercise science, because I knew I wanted to do something in the health field. On the first day of my sophomore year, I switched to dietetics, and I took it and ran.”
Jessie said she wishes she were more aware as a freshman of resources available on campus to discuss options regarding her major. So, when she learned about the opportunity to become a CHS ambassador and help prospective students find their passion, she knew she had to apply.
“I thought it would be a good way to immerse myself more in the College of Human Sciences,” she said. “I felt like I wasn’t too involved with Iowa State, so I thought this would be a good way to put myself out there and learn more about the college.”
As a Human Sciences Ambassador, Jessie attends events such as Destination Iowa State and Explore Iowa State, where she gives prospective students a more personal perspective of the College of Human Sciences.
“I want to do a day-in-the-life visit, where a student wants to know what it’s like to be a college student,” she said. “They get to tag along with a college student and go to all their classes, and I want to do that with someone who is interested in dietetics.”
For those who feel pressure to declare a major right away, she encourages them to be patient.
“It’s OK not to know sometimes,” she said. “You need to explore your options, and Iowa State has been the perfect place for that.”
