Catherine enjoys volunteering at Iowa State

Catherine became interested in healthy living in junior high. In high school, she discovered a career that aligned with her interests; dietetics.

“No other occupation really excited me until then,” she said. “I love food, the chemistry behind it, and am always interested to read more nutrition articles.”

Her interest in dietetics led Catherine to Iowa State. Since starting, she has gotten involved in a variety of organizations including the Student Dietetic Association and Students Helping Our Peers. But to Catherine, one of the most influential experiences has been the time spent volunteering for Iowa State’s Dance Marathon.

Catherine first got involved with Dance Marathon her freshman year. She had heard about the program in Iowa City, and decided she would give it a try. She applied through the website and raised her money by going canning at a football game. She enjoyed the experience so much she decided to continue volunteering throughout her collegiate years.

Though she started as a dancer, Catherine quickly moved into leadership roles, her first being a moral captain.

“It was the most fun I’ve had,” she said. “I loved getting to know the families. However, although I enjoyed it, I didn’t feel like I was making enough of an impact, so I joined a committee.”

Now, Catherine serves on the executive board as the family relations co-director. She’s in charge of organizing events and coordinating communication for the families participating in the program. Although it’s a lot of work, she said she wouldn’t change it.

“It’s a lot,” she said. “But when I get overwhelmed I remind myself why I’m doing it. The families are the most inspirational part for me, and when you love what you do, it’s easy to spend time on it.”
