Iowa State University helped Alyssa discover her career ambitions
Alyssa’s journey at Iowa State University started in the spring of 2013 when she enrolled in the apparel merchandising program with hopes of becoming a prom boutique owner. However, now that dream has changed.
“I always knew I wanted a career in fashion, but I didn’t think it was possible without working in retail. Thanks to ISU, I found my way.”
Alyssa had the opportunity to create content for American Model and Pageant Magazine in the summer of 2014 which sparked a desire to write. She enrolled in JLMC 390J, also known as Fashion and Beauty Writing, where she completed several projects and proved to herself and others she could turn it into a career. To achieve her goals, she added a double major in journalism and got involved writing editorials for Trend magazine which she says was one of her best decisions.
“The most beneficial thing a student can do is get involved. Sure your classes will give you information, but experience is what looks good on a resume.”
Alyssa credits ISU for helping her find her career path and has a little piece of advice for students starting their adventure:
“Four years go by fast, and if you don’t get out and experience what ISU has to offer, it will be gone before you know it.”
