Alex follows dreams to Florence, Italy
Alex has always enjoyed working with kids. She said she loves how each child has different qualities to offer and requires unique ways of learning. When it came time to choose her career, Alex knew she wanted to be a teacher. She enrolled in the elementary education program at Iowa State.
To enrich her college experience, Alex joined clubs and planned to study abroad.
“I’ve traveled a bit, and I knew when I got to college [studying abroad] was on my bucket list,” she said.
Alex did some research and found a month-long program at Lorenzo de’ Medici in Italy. It was perfect for her so she started planning her trip.
She flew to Florence and spent the month of July at the school. She had one class, the history of Florence, and she enjoyed it a lot because she got to truly experience what she was learning through the architecture, culture, and customs she was surrounded with.
“It was so cool to see the history in everything I did and everywhere I went,” she said.
Alex made the most of her trip by visiting other cities around Italy with her friends each weekend. She traveled to Rome, Cinque Terre, Venice, and a few others. She saw the Leaning Tower of Pisa, dipped her toes in the Mediterranean Sea, and hiked around the beautiful country side.
Alex enjoyed her trip a lot and hopes to travel more, especially to Africa. She feels it’s important for her to experience the world so she can share it with her future classroom.
“I want to teach my classroom there is more to the world than what they see,” she said. “I want to make social studies and history more fun and interactive for them.”
