My studies at the London College of Fashion exceeded my expectations. I knew going into the semester that it would challenge me, and it did in the best way possible. There is so much to do and so little time to get it all in before the end of the semester. It was easy to balance my school life with socializing and travel on the weekends. While we were all there to study, it's also an important opportunity to get out and explore.
I remember first hearing about studying abroad at the London College of Fashion my freshman year at orientation. From the moment I heard about the opportunity, I set my heart on going there ever since.
An impact to my life...
I was able to better understand where my passions lay in the fashion industry. Being able to specifically study fashion media and communications, I was opened up to new career paths that aren't as focused on in the states. Every class is taught by industry professionals that are actively working in the field. They really care about the material they teach and its made me motivated to continue creating my work. It is not about becoming a better student, it's about expanding skills and mindset. I came out of the program a better fashion writer, creative director and improved my eye for visuals. This has set me up to obtain my dream job down the line in my long-term career.
My most valuable learning experience...
I definitely gained more confidence in my work. I really valued the input I'd get from my professors considering they all work in the fashion industry. My creative direction professor specifically made our ideas feel important, no matter how unsure we were in the design process. Because of this, I now know of my potential in the industry. It's hard work, but it's not impossible.
I will never forget...
I will never forget the gloomy mornings waking up in Paris during our break. Having time to travel really gave us a moment to watch the world around us. From walking down the street to a local bakery and sipping coffee alone outside, to sharing memories with my friends under the Eiffel Tower at night, Paris gave me a time to reflect and slow down among the chaos.
A surprising discovery...
We were given a project at the beginning of the semester to create our own mini magazine for a class. At the time it seemed impossible to write so many articles, do a photoshoot and layout the spread all in a matter of 3 months. While it is a lot of work, I discovered how much work I am truly capable of completing, especially when it relates to projects that I am passionate about. As I approach graduation in a year, I feel confident in my ability to work in a fast paced industry now.
Advice for others...
You will never encounter this type of experience if you don't do it now. This is the time to travel and learn as much as you can as you move forward in life. If you're even questioning to do it, you already have your answer.
