Abstract: This is a competitive renewal proposal for the currently funded initiative Exceptional Longevity in Rural Environments. We request additional funding of $22,467 for our third year to study very old adults, their optimal ways of adaptation, and their exceptional survivorship skills. The initiative has three specific aims: first, to study exceptional survivorship in rural environments (this project is complete and data are evaluated); second, to assess activity levels and cognitive functioning among centenarians (data collection for this component is under way); third, to develop smart home technology that will promote aging in place. Continued funding for the new initiative will promote new grant activities initiated by faculty associates of the Gerontology Program.
