A Human Sciences Welcome

August 25, 2016

As the fall semester gets underway, I welcome you to the College of Human Sciences and the new academic year. I joined Iowa State University as the CHS dean in July. Whether you are beginning or continuing your adventure in human sciences, I share your excitement for starting the fall semester!

Since joining the college, I’ve learned that our students, faculty and staff are leaders in the human sciences adventure. Enrollment in our majors has soared to 5,000 students. External dollars supporting research topped more than $17 million during 2015-16. Private fundraising has averaged $8 million annually over the past five years generating more than $1 million in student scholarships this year. Experiential opportunities for students are an important part of the student adventure, and our fundraising efforts provided $120,000 to defray costs for students engaged in unpaid internships and student teaching assignments over the past four terms.

To build on our success, we will continue to ensure access to meaningful student experiences, a positive environment for all, and support for impactful discovery that expands human potential and improves people’s lives. My role is to support your goals and aspirations. I look forward to our adventure ahead.

Best wishes for a successful fall semester,

Laura Dunn Jolly, Dean
