Human Sciences Week

Human Sciences Week is a time for the Iowa State University College of Human Sciences to celebrate its unique, innovative, people-oriented programs and rich traditions with food, dance, speakers, and philanthropic events.

The week showcases the college’s commitment to expand human potential and improve people’s lives through diversity and social responsibility, wellness, entrepreneurship, personal financial literacy, and STEM (science, technology, education, and mathematics) education.

Cherry pies are back again! Price is $2/pie. Payments accepted: cash, check or intramural. Customers are encouraged to bring their own containers if buying multiples. Call 525-294-7474 with questions. No pre-orders.

Physical Activity: Wonder Drug for Chronic Disease Prevention
I-Min Lee is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a leading researcher on the role of physical activity in preventing chronic diseases and enhancing longevity. She has served as an expert panelist for such groups as the American College of Sports Medicine, American Heart Association, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, for which she wrote the scientific report on the 2008 physical activity guidelines. Her most recent research has focused on women’s health in collaboration with Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the National Cancer Institute.

Rethinking the Refugee Crisis
Economist Paul Collier is an expert on developing markets and the author of The Bottom Billion: Why the Poorest Countries are Failing and What Can Be Done About It. His most recent book is Exodus: How Migration Is Changing Our World. Collier is director of the Centre for the Study of African Economies at Oxford University, adviser to the Strategy and Policy Department of the International Monetary Fund, and adviser to the Africa Region of the World Bank. He served previously as director of the World Bank’s Development Research Group.

SHOP Can Drive Donate your cans of non-perishable food to the SHOP pantry all week long.
Drop off locations include 220 MacKay Hall, 131 MacKay Hall, 1620 Lagomarcino Hall, Forker Main Lobby, and 2312 Food Science Building.
Peer Mentor Recognition CHS Peer mentors will be recognized for their service to CHS learning communities. Watch for pop-in announcements at CHS orientation classes this week.
