Before enrolling at Iowa State University, Beverly Dunn Nelson was director of nursing of the Mercedian School of Practical Nursing and coordinator of health occupations education for Marshalltown Community College. After earning her master’s and doctoral degrees in industrial education, she was named dean of instruction at Marshalltown and served as an adjunct professor at Iowa State. Since 1986, Nelson has served as executive vice president of Iowa Valley Community College in Marshalltown.

A stellar community volunteer, a founding member of the Marshall Economic Development Impact Committee and Marshalltown’s 1995 Citizen of the Year, Nelson has initiated efforts like Marshall County’s annual Economic Summit in Washington, D.C. Now in its fifth year, the summit has successfully channeled community leaders’ congressional lobbying efforts to improve transportation, education, health and human services, law enforcement, housing and agriculture.

As a freshman State of Iowa representative, for District 64, Nelson has swiftly earned the respect of the legislative leadership as a trailblazer of unquestionable integrity and a champion of economic development, education and civil rights. Iowa’s citizens are privileged to benefit from her energetic leadership.
